Book Review: Thirst 1

Thirst No. 1: The Last Vampire, Black Blood, and Red Dice (Thirst, #1)Thirst No. 1: The Last Vampire, Black Blood, and Red Dice by Christopher Pike
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Best Vampire Series

I have loved this series since I was a kid and first read it. I re-read it every few years. It is that good!

Thirst's main lead is Sita, who believes she’s the last vampire, but discovers she isn’t. She needs to stay alive and out of danger as foes (new and old) try to take her down.

This is my first time reading this electronically as “Thirst,” instead of the original series as paperback. It didn’t disappoint. I’m super excited to continue reading the series!!

For those of you not familiar with Christopher Pike books, this is a young adult book, so there isn't any sex scenes, but sex is mentioned, which use to make teenage me feel like I was reading something scandalous. Haha. Adult me would love to see this turned into an adult series, but I still love it how it is.

For any vampire book readers, this is a must-read series! There is so much action, adventure, history, and mythology in this book, it's hard to put it down!

These aren't the shiny/sparkly vampires of Twilight and that's okay. If you've read some of my past reviews, you'll know I'm a huge Twilight fan too, but this book and this author started my love of vampires. Sita has classic strength, speed, and most of all, heart. Plus, we see her acquire new skills. It's neat to know that even a 5,000 year old vampire can learn and grow. Don't get me wrong though, she often still sounds like the 19 year old she was when she was changed.

I hope you give this series a try or give it to a tween/teen you know. It deserves to keep coming around for many generations. I've included a link to it on Amazon. Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: The Antiquities Dealer

The Antiquities Dealer (A David Greenberg Mystery)The Antiquities Dealer by Ed Protzel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Perfectly balanced in Sci-Fi meets reality, the plot is by far a 5 out of 5. The premise is that a scientist is working on a cloning program and he needs the crucifixion nail to create another Jesus, but as you can imagine, it's not easy to obtain. The person who had it was murdered and they must decipher a code to locate where he hid it. This book has action, adventure, suspense, mystery, and a little bit of romance. It's fantastic! It's like Indiana Jones meets The Da Vinci Code.

If the plot was the only thing I was reviewing, I would stop here and give this a 5 star review. However, I would be remiss to ignore the editing. I would love for the author to sit with a good editor and work out some of the kinks in the book. This book is really good, but with the help of a good editor, it could be really great! It could even turn into the next big Indiana Jones type series. I could see it now - David Greenberg and The Holy Nail.

Some of the editing issues are little. I would suggest adding the POV person with the chapter titles, because it's not always clear who is talking. I know with some authors they do this by design for parts where we are meant to be guessing, but if it's not done by design, there needs to be better acknowledgement of who is talking to us in the other chapters. Otherwise readers become frustrated with turning pages to determine who the main character is when it's constantly switching.

Other items are larger. I really struggled with what year it was and what age the characters were. Maybe I missed it early in the book, but I knew it was supposed to be newer, because there were cell phones and other technology that's newer. Also, David was divorced twice and had graduated college, but Miriam wanted to have another child, so I would assume they were younger than 40. Perhaps they were around 35? That seems awfully young to be divorced twice, but not impossible.

Another reason I struggled with the year was because a lot of the dialogue felt older. It was like dialogue I would be reading from a book that's a few decades ago. Especially among David and his friends. David's friends...I was totally confused every time Finkel and Daddy were involved. Their dialogue often left me scratching my head and led to the majority of the confusion about which decade it was. They seemed like they were relics themselves.

Finally, David...oh David. You had a lot of monologues. I'm okay with monologues if it helps us explore the character and what they're feeling. I thought somewhere in the book it was mentioned that David is an atheist. I believe he was Jewish by blood, but didn't share those beliefs. I don't know too many atheists, which is fine, but I question how many atheists monologue about ancient gods. There were quite a few references to different mythologies, which seemed odd of an atheist. That could be a bad perception on my part, but it seemed odd.

Then there was the romance. It's been a long time since I reviewed a fade to black book. So, if you're looking for hard core sex scenes, this isn't the right book for you. If you're looking for a few mildly romantic moments overshadowed by a lot of action, adventure, and mystery, then read this one!

Overall, I would have given this book 3.5 stars if that was possible. In cases where I want to give half stars, I round up for the author's benefit. I hope the author works with an editor to clean up some of the book that could shine more with some help. If he does, then this has a strong chance of being picked up and mainstreamed. It has a really solid base with a lot of potential!

Book Review: Born in Fire

Born in Fire (Fire and Ice Trilogy, #1)Born in Fire by K.F. Breene
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’m pumped to read more!

This is the first book in the series, so we spend quite a bit of time meeting the characters.

There’s our mystery female lead, Reagan. We find out that she’s a bounty hunter who doesn’t want people to find out her lineage, because if her Dad finds out about her, then life will become difficult.

Next is the handsome, vampire male lead, Darius. Yummy! Strong, fast, sexy, and has manners to die for! Yes! These two team up to take on a mystery person who is trying to amass an army to take over and gain power.

In short, we have a fun little plot and good characters. We throw in good mages Dizzy and Callie for kicks and giggles and this is an enjoyable first book in the series.

I’m excited to read the next. I enjoy the swears this author uses. They’re creative and funny. I hope you give this a try. Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: My (Mostly) Fake Romance

My (Mostly) Fake Wedding (My Mostly Funny Romance #2)My (Mostly) Fake Wedding by Penelope Bloom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A (mostly) good book

This book wasn’t quite as good as the first one in the series, but it was funny and cute. I didn’t have that same “can’t put it down” feeling though.

In this book, Chris is about to be kicked off his football team and Damon sets him up with a fake marriage to help keep him on the team.

Chris is a big man-child. Everything is a joke, except for his feelings for Belle. He needs to come to his senses and tell Belle how he really feels before it’s too late.

Belle is a wedding planner who was recently humiliated at a wedding she was planning for her childhood sweetheart. She signs on to help plan Chris’ wedding, but can’t set aside her feelings for him.

Lots of great scenes in this book! From the mile high club walk of shame to the flower garden in Europe, I enjoyed so much of this!

If you’re looking for the same level of sex as the first book, I think you’ll be disappointed. I felt like the first book had more/better sex scenes, but this one had more humor.

Give this book and series a try. It’s a solid pick for your next reading indulgence. Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: My (Mostly) Secret Baby

My (Mostly) Secret Baby (My Mostly Funny Romance #1)My (Mostly) Secret Baby by Penelope Bloom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Grumpy Boss with Heart of Gold

Penelope Bloom delivers another great - couldn’t put it down - RomCom. I laughed, cried, and loved every bit of this book!

Chelsea is the most stubborn person I have ever known. She can’t step back from a challenge and when she meets this grumpy, stuck-up man while crashing a PR conference, she gets sucked into a challenge she can’t say no to. The challenge? He can make her yell “yes!” as she hits a big O.

The book then jumps 5 years ahead and Chelsea is in a place in her life where she needs to go to Mr Grumpy for a job. She gets the job and the sexual tension builds and builds.

This book will seriously have you reaching for relief! There are lots of love scenes and fantasies. You won’t be left hanging in that department.

Give this a read if you’re looking for a fun/funny RomCom book. Happy reading y’all!

Book Review: My Big Fat Fake Honeymoon

My Big Fat Fake HoneymoonMy Big Fat Fake Honeymoon by Lauren Landish
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lorenzo to the Rescue

The youngest Andrews, Abi, gets herself in the craziest messes! This time, she tells a childhood nemesis she’s on her honeymoon with Lorenzo, a chef she only met once at her sister’s wedding.

Abi is crazy and fun and everything you want in a bestie. She lives her life doing what she wants and has created a flower business from the ground up, because she loves making flower arrangements.

Lorenzo is a bastard chef who flits from kitchen to kitchen around the world. Originally from Italy, he makes amazing fettuccini that a famous bride to be must have at her wedding, which sends him to Aruba to work on the same wedding as Abi.

Lorenzo is the biker, tatted up, Italian speaking bad boy that women dream about having in bed. He may be this “bastard” chef on the surface, but he’s actually an awesome guy. He’s the sweetest to Abi and he has you saying, “awwww...” practically every time he opens his mouth.

Read this book! You’ll enjoy everything about it. From the vibrator grabbing sex scenes to Jane’s cut a bitch craziness this book is great! Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: How to Wife Your Nanny

How To Wife Your NannyHow To Wife Your Nanny by Melinda Minx
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cute fast read

If you’re looking for a sweet and fast read, choose this book!

Noah and Lacey kind of have a history together. Noah’s company is the publisher for Lacey’s books, but his company hasn’t been very fair to her. When his daughter starts reading and enjoying the books, he sets out to meet Lacey and convince her to write more books. But it’s not as easy as just asking and soon Noah needs a nanny too. So, Noah convinces Lacey to be his daughter’s Nanny and write more books for $1 million dollars.

This book is cute and sweet, so don’t expect an action packed adventure. There are a few funny parts to enjoy and a small climax where the characters need to prove their relationship. I really liked the Chance Charter rip off of Harry Potter parts.

There were a few small sex scenes that were solid. They weren’t so great that you’ll need relief, but they were well done.

Give this book a try. It’s a good romance that’ll have you saying awwww. Happy reading y’all!

Book Review: Hate the Player

Hate the Player (Hollywood #3)Hate the Player by Max Monroe
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Love the player!!

This book had me from the moment it started! Max Monroe delivers another solid RomCom book. I laughed, I cried, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Birdie Harris is a country singer who lands a role in a movie with lead actor Andrew Watson. Andrew is Hollywood’s biggest player while Birdie seems to be something of America’s sweetheart. They begin a hate turned love romance that will hit you in all the feels. We even get to see Billie and Luca return in this book with a pregnant Billie!!

Solid sex scenes and sweet romance complete an already great book.

This book is part of a series, but could definitely be read as a stand alone. Whatever you do, make sure you read it! Happy reading y’all!

Book Review: Faking it with the Frenemy

Faking It with the FrenemyFaking It with the Frenemy by Nadia Lee
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The evil queen tries to destroy everyone’s happiness

Ok, so maybe I’ve been watching too much Once Upon a time, but it just came to Disney+, so who can blame me?? And really, there is an Evil Queen trying to destroy Kim and Wyatt’s romance since it started.

Kim and Wyatt were together when they were younger and Wyatt was Kim’s first. Unfortunately they broke up and hated each other every day after.

Then Kim’s boss made a bet that forced Kim to work with Wyatt. Their attraction is stronger than ever and they can only resist each other for so long. They need to overcome their past in order to succeed in the future.

I liked the general plot and characters. As a mom, I felt really bad for Vi and wanted to run Geneva over with my car. I wasn’t alone in that sentiment. I have a feeling there is a line of people who want to do that and Yuna will probably beat them all.

Kim isn’t my favorite type of character. I like stronger women and while she is strong(ish), there’s something about her that’s very fragile feeling. She’s still pretty insecure for an almost thirty year old.

Overall this book is okay. There are some really funny lines and it’s worth the read. I might come across some of the other books in this series and I’ll probably enjoy them similarly, but I’m not rushing to go read them all. Give this a shot though, it’s a good book. Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: Ruined King

Ruined King (Night Elves Trilogy #2)Ruined King by C.N. Crawford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Reunited and it feels so good

Ali believes Gavin betrays her because someone sends a letter to the Night elves telling them everything about her trip with Galin. She gets sentenced to the mines and has to find a way out.

Fortunately, the high elves strike a deal with the Night elves to host a Winnowing and Ali is chosen as a competitor. Ali and Galin reunite and the truth comes out.

This book had lots of action and adventure! Galin and Ali fortify their love and have some alone time to get it on 😉

Overall this is an excellent second book. I’m excited for the third and am really hoping for the perfect happy ending. Give this series a try! Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: Cursed Prince

Cursed Prince (Night Elves Trilogy #1)Cursed Prince by C.N. Crawford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Exciting first book!

This is an exciting opening to the Night Elves Trilogy! Ali is an assassin for the Night Elves and it’s her job to return an object hidden away in a safety deposit box. While on her mission, everything falls apart and she winds up in jail where she meets Marroc. Ali and Marroc escape and go on their own mission to free Marroc from his curse.

It’s always hard to learn a new world and new people. This author does a good job of introducing enough people so you have more than just the main characters, but not enough people that your head is spinning. There’s adventure, magic, a budding romance, and many other wonderful parts to this book.

I do have to throw this out there, because ever since I watched House of Wax when I was younger, I have issues with people losing fingers in books. I know a finger is a benign thing to lose compared to an entire arm or leg, but it unsettled me for some reason.

Anyhow, this is a great first book and I’m looking forward to reading more in this series. I hope you try it! Happy reading y’all!

Book Review: The Rock Star’s Fake Fiancée

The Rock Star's Fake Fiancée (A Second Chance at Love Romantic Comedy) (Fake It Till You Make It Book 3)The Rock Star's Fake Fiancée (A Second Chance at Love Romantic Comedy) by Kenzie Reed
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rockin rockin burnin love

It’s great returning to Swampy bottom and meeting the man Careful/Cautious Callie falls in love with! We also get to revisit our favorite characters from the previous books and see how they’re doing today.

This book could definitely be read alone or with the series. It’s a great read. I love Gramma Mae and the trouble she gets up to. Plus, we meet a new troublemaker, Fiona.

The sex scenes are fine, but they aren’t the type that have you running for a vibrator or desperately reaching for your significant other.

This is a solid read and I hope there will be more in the series. I love these characters and this small down. Everyone could use a town like Bitters End. Give this book a try. Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: The Takeover (The Miles High Club #2)

The Takeover (The Miles High Club #2)The Takeover by T.L. Swan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Take me over Tristan!

Such a great book! I laughed, cried and thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the Miles High Club series.

This book was a story about Tristan and Claire. I didn’t love Claire, but I did love how she loves Tristan. I haven’t lost a husband, so it’s hard to completely understand some of Claire’s decisions.

There were some parts of this book that were so funny that I worried I would wake my husband sleeping next to me. There were other parts that were so touching that I cried like a baby. And there were other parts that were so hot that you need relief from them.

My only critique was that the book seemed to end rather suddenly. I would have liked more time with the characters or an epilogue that was about 5-10 years in the future. I know there’s a fine line between finishing too soon and dragging on, but it felt a little unfinished. Read it and see what you think!

Overall, this is a really good book. I highly suggest you give this series a try. Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: Midnight Sun

Midnight Sun (Twilight, #1.5)Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Bella’s version is better

I’ve wanted this book since it was a short story on Stephenie’s website. I LOVE Twilight. It’s a 5 star book. Mostly because Bella is hilarious. I love her wittiness.

Edward...**sigh** Edward is very self-loathing and sometimes annoying. I liked how this book explained things I had always wondered about and it really helps explain New Moon and other books. I found Edwards communication with the rest of his family interesting. They really don’t ask him questions out loud very often. They mostly talk through his mind reading. That was kind of eye opening and neat. I also liked the comparisons reading Bella’s parents minds. It makes me wonder what kind of immortals they would make. I bet Bella’s mom would be able to control people with her desires/will. I wonder if Charlie would also become some sort of shield.

I would still be interested in seeing other chapters of Edward from other books, but I don’t know if I could re-read the rest of the series from Edward’s POV.

It took me about 3 weeks to read this book, which is really sad. It should have only taken me a few days. But it just wasn’t that interesting. I couldn’t stay involved. Maybe that was because I already knew what was going to happen? I’m not sure. To this day I can pick up Twilight and read it anytime. My paperback copy is well loved.

I wish I could give this book more stars, but I just can’t. Twilight is still one of my favorite series and Stephenie did a very good job writing this from Edward’s perspective. Edward is really just not as funny or interesting as Bella. I hope you all read this and enjoy it. Happy reading y’all!!

Book Review: Resisting the Lawyer

Resisting the Lawyer (Dirty Hot Resistance #3)Resisting the Lawyer by Emelia Blair
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

You won’t object to this book

This sweet romance stars Lucas and Elise and adorable little Sophie. Lucas needs to convince Elise that he’s interested in her and her daughter as more than just friends. Meanwhile, Sophie’s sperm donor keeps making Elise’s life hell.

Overall, this third book in the series is good. I didn’t connect with Elise and Lucas as much as I did with some of the other characters, but I did like how Elise was a strong mamma bear when needed.

The sex was just okay in this book. That could have been because I wasn’t that into Elise and Lucas. Or maybe it was because it took so long for it to happen. Either way,it left me unsatisfied.

I still suggest reading this book and hope to come back to this series and readJace’s story. Happy reading y’all!!
